It's always perfect launch weather when students venture beyond their schoolyards and enter a Challenger Learning Center. Within minutes, they are transported throughout the Solar System - perhaps to rendezvous with a comet, or maybe even voyage to the Moon or Mars. Come today and DISCOVER!
Colorado Springs is heavily invested in space programs. When we employ space mission simulations to attract students into mathematics, science, and technology careers, we are filling the pipeline for very lucrative and exciting careers right here in our community. Industry and others are beginning to understand that value.
Challenger Learning Centers offer realistic mock-ups of Mission Control and an orbiting space station. Students join teams at computer consoles or onboard the orbiting space lab, rev up their imaginations, and work together toward the mission's goal, whether it is the launching of a probe or the interception of a comet.
It's clear that a visit to a Challenger Learning Center isn't just a field trip—it is a deeply grounded learning experience that engages students, transforming them into scientists, engineers, or researchers, and placing them in a simulated space mission where they solve real-life challenges.
Rooted in national education standards in all of the communities we serve, Challenger Learning Centers reach over 500,000 students and upwards of 20,000 teachers per year through a broad array of mission-based activities.
Regardless of a student's cultural background, economic situation, gender, learning style, or academic level, every Challenger Learning Center simulation provides students with an opportunity to succeed. Every mission is successful! Students leave with a renewed spirit of camaraderie and boosted self-esteem.

What is the
Challenger Learning
Center? The Challenger Learning Center is a not-for-profit educational facility. Using a space-science theme, we provide interactive mission simulations that are designed to enhance math, science and technology education. Participants also enhance their critical thinking and team building skills while working through the problems that arise during mission scenarios.
Are there other Challenger Learning Centers? Yes. Over 51 centers exist in the United States, with others in Canada and overseas. Ours was the first center in the state of Illinois.
Is the center affiliated with NASA or NASA's Space Camp? We have no affiliation with NASA or any government entity or programs. Our center is part of the national Challenger Center based in Alexandria, Virginia.
How did it all begin? After the tragic loss of seven astronauts in the Challenger Space Shuttle explosion of 1986, the surviving family members came together and developed the Challenger Learning Center concept in memory of their loved ones. The ill-fated mission was known as the "Teacher In Space" mission with education being an important part of the mission. The Challenger Learning Centers proudly carry their mission forward to enhance math, science and technology education.
What's inside the center? Our center contains five main elements for use during the simulated space missions:
Who can visit the center? People of all ages come to the Challenger Learning Center for missions that are scheduled in advance. Our primary focus is on school-based missions, designed for entire classes of 5th grade students (future mission scenarios will be added for 6th, 7th and 8th grade classes). Beyond the school missions, we also offer public programs, summer camps, birthday missions, family missions and corporate missions. All missions are scheduled in advance.
What are the hours of operation? The Challenger Learning Center does not conduct "drop-in" missions or tours, therefore there are no regular "hours of operation". All missions are scheduled in advance. During the school year, two scheduled school missions are conducted each day Monday through Friday. Other scheduled missions are conducted during certain evenings and on weekends.
How can I arrange for a tour? Tours of the facility, including a presentation about the learning center programs, are available for your group or organization on a pre-scheduled basis. Please use the on-line form or call the center at (815) 338-7722 to request more information. How much do the missions cost? A school mission costs $650.00 per class. A class consists of 16-34 students. For more information, please contact the Challenger Learning Center at (815) 338-7722.
Are the missions aligned with state standards? Yes. The school missions are aligned with Illinois state education standards. A chart illustrating the details of alignment to each Illinois standard is available. We are also working toward aligning the programs with Wisconsin state education standards.
What's the difference between school missions and the other missions? School missions are designed for entire classes of 5th grade students. Other missions (i.e.: family, birthday, scout, etc.) do not include the six weeks of pre and post mission classroom study activities. Corporate missions include programming designed specifically to address issues in the workplace.
What is Cosmic Camp? Cosmic Camp is a series of 2-day and 5-day summer camp programs. Each camp includes many activities besides the actual mission simulations. Registration for each summer's Cosmic Camps opens on the 1st of March. Visit our public programming page for more detailed information.
I'd like to work at the center. Any openings? Please visit our Employment Opportunities page for the answer to this question.
How can I volunteer at the center? Volunteer opportunities exist in many areas and we welcome all inquiries. Please advise us of your interest using the on-line volunteer profile form.
What are the funding needs of the center? As of September 2002 we have raised $2 million of the $3.5 million needed to cover the costs of our building, renovation and equipment. Revenues received from the various missions will offset the costs of operating the center. Future plans include a second set of simulation areas, allowing for additional programming for students and adults. The Challenger Learning Center is entirely dependent on private, corporate and foundation funding, and your tax deductible contribution will benefit countless kids from Illinois and Wisconsin! Visit our Giving page for more information. Thank you!
Can I make a donation on-line with my credit card? COMING SOON....Yes! Visit the GIVING section where you'll find a convenient "Make a Donation" button. You can contribute any amount you like using your Visa or MasterCard. All on-line donations are processed on a secure server. Thank you!
